Munich birthplace of the Nazi's

Europe Trip 2014
April 7 & 8, 2014
Once again we are jet-setting around the world; this time we are taking on a road-trip through Europe. Our start point is Munich, Deutschland and our end point is Amsterdam, Dutch-land. Today just consisted of us flying to Munich and being tired. Our flight from Vancouver to Amsterdam left at 3:45pm, but we got to the airport early in the hopes that we would be able to secure some more leg-roomy seats so Ben wouldn’t end up standing next to the exit door for 9 hours. Unfortunately they didn’t have any better seats available so Ben did end up standing for much of the flight.

The flight itself was more or less uneventful, there was very little turbulence and no screaming babies. One highlight of the flight however was noticing that a woman in the row in front of us had a cat in her carry-on! I didn’t see her take it out of its carrier but it seemed pretty calm and collected. When we got to Amsterdam Ben promised me that there would be cheese samples and there were none! Also for those of you keeping track, we did not have any of what Ben proclaims to be “the best pizza in the world” during our layover.

The airport did however have a library and museum which we are going to explore on our way home.  On our way to our gate we saw a guy, probably in his mid-twenties, walking towards us on the moving walkway and he had the most wicked awesome mane of 80’s hair that I have ever seen. Our connecting flight to Munich ended up being delayed by almost an hour and a half, but we still made it to Munich by 2:30pm local time. We caught the S-Bahn into the city and easily found our hotel a few blocks away from the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station).

It was only 4pm but we were totally bagged as neither one of us had slept on either flight, but we knew we needed to stay up until later so tomorrow we could start fresh and be on German time. So we set out for a wander around the city to work out all our blood clots.

We came across a church down the street from our hotel and went inside for a quick peek. Then we headed to Marienplatz city center so Ben could see the Glockenschpiel (sp?) which ended up being the site of our first trip selfie (is it still a “selfie” if there are 2 of us in the picture?).

We continued wandering aimlessly, mostly because we were both too tired to make any directional decisions and then we went into a random pizza place for dinner and ended up spending a fortune on bottled still water (I should have just ordered a beer). The pizza was pretty good but the weird thing was it wasn’t cut at all, we had to cut it up ourselves. Plus we have leftovers for our breakfast tomorrow.

While we were having our dinner the clouds cleared up and it got nice and sunny out with a few sparse clouds (really hoping it’s just like this tomorrow). We had passed a little grocery store on our way out to Marienplatz so we hit that up on our way back to the hotel for some snacks and water. I had the awesome foresight to bring a reusable grocery bag in my purse so I wouldn’t have to pay for plastic bags, which I feel makes up in part for the following things I have (so far) realized that I forgot. This list includes: my watch, gum (not a bit deal but Ben still gave me grief about it), and all of our road maps.

Now it’s about 8pm local time and we are back at our hotel winding down. We had planned on going to Dachau tomorrow but now we have decided to join a tour group that is going to Dachau and also doing a Third Reich tour in Munich. We figured we would get much more out of the experience with a guided tour than if we just tried to guide ourselves.
